Today wasn’t just another spring turkey hunt — it was a Kids with Disabilities Adventures (KWD Adventures) outing, and three remarkable young hunters were about to make memories that would last a lifetime.

KWD Adventures is a nonprofit dedicated to taking kids with special needs into the outdoors — giving them the chance to fish, hunt, and experience the wild in ways many thought impossible. This hunt would showcase not just the beauty of the outdoors, but also the creativity, determination, and compassion it takes to make such adventures possible.

Damen’s Ridge-Top Tom

First up was 15-year-old Damen Bash from Sandy, Utah. Damen lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but he’s the kind of kid who meets every challenge with the question, “How can I do this?” instead of “Can I do this?”

Because Damen doesn’t have the strength to pull a traditional trigger, the KWD team engineered a custom push-button firing mechanism — complete with double safety switches — so he could hunt independently. After hours of tinkering, testing, and adjusting, the setup was perfect.

The morning hunt came up empty, but that evening at a property up Hobble Creek, fortune changed. A tom answered the team’s calls from high on a ridge. Against the odds, the bird flew straight down to the decoys — something even veteran hunters rarely see at 4 p.m.

“Just stay calm,” Damen told himself as he lined up the shot. One steady push of the button, and the tom was down. Cheers erupted. “Your trigger mechanism worked perfect, bud!” someone called out. Damen’s smile said the rest.

Missy’s Long-Awaited Bird

Next in the field was Missy Cowie, a determined young woman born with spina bifida. Missy’s life has been defined not by her disability, but by her achievements — from competing in the National Miss Amazing pageant to cheering at West Jordan High.

Turkey hunting had been on her bucket list for years, and with the help of KWD and a generous landowner, she finally had her chance. The setup was tricky — her wheelchair needed to be angled in the blind for the perfect shot — but the volunteers worked seamlessly to make it happen.

Within hours, two massive toms came strutting in. “Front one! Hit him again!” the guides urged. Missy stayed focused, firing until her bird was down. When she finally held the tom, its long beard swinging in the sunlight, she laughed and said, “That’s nice. Way nice.”

Carter’s Comeback

The final hunter of the day was 23-year-old Carter Kasanova. Just over a year ago, Carter’s life changed in an instant when an ATV accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. But Carter’s spirit never broke — he approaches life with an easy smile and a readiness to try anything.

The KWD crew had another surprise for him before the hunt: an all-terrain “action traction” wheelchair, donated through the efforts of Tyler Shepard Construction and other supporters. It meant Carter could get into places most wheelchairs couldn’t — snow, mud, fields — opening up whole new worlds of adventure.

In the basin that afternoon, guide Travis called in a flock. Two huge toms made their way to the decoys. Carter took aim, moved the gun slowly, and pulled the trigger. His tom crumpled to the ground.

“That’s as good as it gets,” one of the guides said, beaming. Carter just grinned, holding his bird — a massive trophy and a symbol of resilience.

More Than a Hunt

For the volunteers, landowners, donors, and guides, this wasn’t just about harvesting turkeys. It was about proving that with the right support and creativity, the outdoors can be accessible to everyone. It was about laughter in the blinds, problem-solving in the field, and that moment when a young hunter holds their bird for the first time.

As one KWD leader put it, “You take these kids out, and it changes not only their lives, but ours too. The things we see and get to experience — it’s life-changing.”

From adaptive gear to donated properties, from skilled calling to pure generosity, every piece came together to make this day possible. The hunts were a testament to what happens when a community rallies around a cause.

Two incredible young girls, Kinley (15) and Kendall (8), took center stage as they set out on their first-ever turkey hunts—an adventure made possible through the combined efforts of passionate sportsmen, local sponsors, and loving families.

Kinley’s Story: Strength Beyond the Chair

Just 10 months before the hunt, Kinley’s life changed in an instant. A freak accident at the gym left her paralyzed after breaking her back at the T10 and T11 vertebrae. She underwent major surgery—two rods and several screws—and spent months rebuilding her strength, physically and emotionally.

So when she arrived at the hunt, it wasn’t just about getting a turkey—it was about reclaiming a sense of independence and achieving something she never imagined possible.

“Being able to come and do this was one of the very first things that she’s been able to like get out and achieve something fun,” said Kinley’s mom. “She’s come a long way. She’s strong.”

Thanks to Compassion Mobility, Kinley was outfitted with an Action Track Chair, allowing her to navigate the rugged terrain with ease. She also received a complete camo wardrobe from King’s Camo and a personalized firearm.

On the morning of the hunt, Kinley waited patiently in the blind. The calling worked, and two toms appeared—one cautiously keeping his distance, while the other locked onto the decoys.

“Okay Kinley, right there. Aim it right on him. Just wait… okay… shoot!”

Kinley took the shot—and made a perfect hit.

“Good job Kinley! Good job!” cheered the guides, as the blind erupted in celebration. “She smoked him! Oh, she did a great job.”

For Kinley, it was more than a successful hunt—it was a moment that lifted her confidence and reminded her what she’s capable of.

Kendall’s Journey: Big Heart, Bigger Courage

Eight-year-old Kendall lives with congenital muscular dystrophy, a condition that weakens her muscles and earlier this year confined her to a wheelchair. But like Kinley, she’s a fighter—and she was more than ready to take part in her first turkey hunt.

Before the hunt, Kendall and her family were surprised with an incredible gift: a brand new wheelchair-accessible van, donated by the Wood family. After losing their wife and mother, Miriam, to cancer, they wanted to honor her giving spirit by paying it forward.

“We got a wheelchair van that it would mean the world to us if you guys would accept that as a gift,” said Nick Wood. “It would help us on our healing journey as we try to find meaning in our loss.”

Nick shared that Miriam had a special place in her heart for children. During her own treatments, she often got emotional when passing Primary Children’s Hospital.

“She was always looking for ways to help people around her… she’d choke up thinking about the kids and the struggles they go through.”

For Kendall’s family, the van was life-changing.

“This is something that I’m never going to forget,” said her father. “We literally were just talking about my truck falling apart… it hasn’t had AC in five years. He really hit a lot of different areas within me—because this is big.”

The Hunt: Adaptive Tools, Big Wins

On her first morning in the blind, Kendall was startled by the sound of the gun—but she didn’t give up. The next day, the KWD team introduced a push-button trigger system, allowing her to fire the gun with just a light press.

“We’re going to give power, then we’re going to give the safety, and then we’re going to tell Kendall to shoot the gun… push, and it fires the weapon.”

The team got into position well before dawn. As the turkeys hit the ground and worked their way up the canyon, the calling from the guides intensified. Then it happened.

“Here he comes, here he comes, here he comes… okay Kendall—push.”

She pressed the button—and hit her mark.

“YES! Good job girl!”

The joy was palpable. Hugs, high-fives, and beaming faces filled the blind.

“That thing’s cool!” Kendall said, grinning ear to ear.

For the volunteers, it was a powerful reminder of why they do this work.

“That’s a game-changer for these kids, it’s inspiring as an adult to see these kids overcome something… pretty cool to see these kids succeed with something they probably thought they couldn’t do.”

Powered by Love, Built on Community

These hunts were made possible thanks to the dedication and generosity of dozens of people and companies who came together to give these kids an unforgettable experience. From custom gear to adaptive equipment, mobility devices, and even transportation—every detail was handled with love.

“It’s neat to see people just step up to make a difference in somebody else’s life instead of your own,” one volunteer said. “What a way to give back.”

Families walked away not only with wild game but with new confidence, hope, and friendships that will last a lifetime.

“They’re going to remember what they did. They’re going to remember how it made them feel. And that’s the most important thing.”

A Special Day at the Salem Pond Fishing Event

The Salem Pond Fishing Event was a truly special day for some incredible kids in Utah County. This year’s event saw the largest turnout ever, with 1,500 hot dogs and 1,600 drinks handed out to participants. The excitement was palpable as kids eagerly cast their lines into the water, thrilled by the experience of catching fish—slippery and all!

Bringing the Community Together

The Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) played a key role in making this event a success. Officers in uniform were on hand to assist the children, ensuring they had a safe and enjoyable time fishing. Events like these highlight the importance of community engagement and support, allowing individuals with different needs to come together and enjoy the great outdoors.

“It’s a great chance for us as the Division of Wildlife and conservation officers to spend time with these kids and give them an amazing outdoor experience,” one officer shared.

Honoring a Legacy

This year’s event also featured a heartfelt tribute. Eagle Scout Lonnie Scha unveiled his Eagle Scout project—a bench dedicated to Kevin Donahue, a beloved member of the community who was instrumental in organizing and supporting the event before his passing last year. Lonnie’s project serves as a lasting tribute to Kevin’s impact.

“I want people to think about all the great things he’s done and how many lives he’s impacted,” Lonnie expressed. “I support what he stood for, just like everyone else who comes here and helps out.”

Desi, often our trusted spotter, stepped into the spotlight as a hunter this year. Battling through a snowstorm, she showcased resilience and skill, ultimately bagging her bird after an eventful day filled with gobbling turkeys and close calls.
